The Guide To Making The Perfect Cheese Platter

A must-have for any dinner party, function or event is a delicious cheese and dip platter to serve as your guests arrive with a glass of wine or champagne.

A favourite for just about any event, a cheese platter is a great no-fuss way to treat your guests to mouth-watering nibbles while they wait to eat the main courses.

Read on below for a few tips on choosing the perfect combination of cheeses, how to serve and what to pair them with!

Selecting the cheese:

As a general rule, a great cheese platter should be simple and elegant; with one strong cheese like a blue cheese mixed with soft Camembert cheese and classic aged cheeses like Cheddar or Gouda. Try choosing cheeses with varying tastes and textures and from all cheese types for excellent variety. It’s also important to choose cheeses that aren’t too overpowering with their scent, as you don’t want to scare the guests away!

As a rule, choose one from each of these types:

Aged: Aged Cheddar, Comte, Goat Gouda

Soft: Constant Bliss, Camembert, Brillat-Savarin

Firm: Manchego, Mimolette, Parmigiano-Reggiano

Blue: Gorgonzola Dolce, Valdeón, Stilton

How to serve:

If you want to be classic, the French say it’s best to serve only odd numbers of cheese, so three, five or seven as a general rule and to place them in a clockwise direction starting with the mildest to the strongest. This is handy for you to explain to guests the strength of each cheese in a simple way that’s easy to remember.

When serving your cheese, it’s good to remember that the best flavour of the cheese is when it is served at room temperature. So when entertaining set a reminder to remove your cheeses from the refrigerator around an hour or so before you plan on serving them to allow them to adjust to room temperature.

Once you’ve done that it’s time to serve it up! A cheese platter looks beautiful served on a long rectangle or circular white china platter or on a wooden board.
