2016 is well under way and we are looking forward to another year of great food and drink! That’s why we’ve rounded up some of this year’s biggest food trends to delight your inner foodie and to get you excited for what’s to come.

The biggest food trends for 2016:

Fast-food:

No we don’t mean more McDonalds! While this year’s fast-food trend is inspired by our takeaway favourites, it is getting a gourmet makeover we know you will just love. Just like in 2015, burgers are big and aren’t going anywhere, with more restaurants adding new flavours, sauces and delicious buns for a modern take on an old classic. Fish n’ chips will also be added to the fast-food meets gourmet menu, with restaurants offering the classic Australian meal with a fine dining touch.

Vegetables have been re-invented to become “cool” again this year, thanks to consumers and food lovers becoming more health conscious and vegie aware. From grated zucchinis and carrots mixed into salads and pastas, to an abundance of beans, peas, lentils, chickpeas and ancient grains, all that is good for you is trendy again.

Savoury deserts:

Move over sweet-tooths, as a new savoury taste will be filling up desert menus around the country. While Nutella donuts and cronuts were all the rage last year, slowly chefs have been adding savoury delights like bacon and sea-salt to bridge the gap between sweet and savoury. Working with these savoury flavours, herbs and spices including rosemary, thyme, coriander and chilli will be added to deserts alongside vegetables including pumpkin and beetroot.

This is good news for health lovers, who will be swapping chocolatey and sugar-infused treats with those that have added goodness.

Charcoal cooking:

If you’re dining at a restaurant and your food is served on a fiery hotplate, don’t be concerned! This is another big food trend for 2016, with chefs moving backyard BBQs to indoor cook-ups adding a smoky flavour to our menus. Foods cooked over a flame will branch out from traditional meat, to include chargrilled vegetables for a new twist.
